I had posted earlier about skin rash and itchiness on face after taking clove oil for SIFO eradication. I understand it is a somewhat rare side effect but here I am who has had it. I would like to ask if anyone has experienced something similar and how they went about resolving it - what worked and what didn’t. That will be of immense help to me.

By way of background, I was a direct patient of Dr. Davis for several years and have been following the WheatBelly diet and supplements religiously the entire time. I have been eating the L Reuteri yogurt for many years and the SIBO yogurt since July 20022.

On May 1, 2023 I started taking 1 drop of clove oil first in olive oil and later in Carlson’s Fish Oil progressing to 4 drops in 2.5 weeks. The clove oil is the Now product pictured below. On May 20, 2023 I woke up with rashes, hives and severe itchiness on lower lip, chin and around the eyes. Facial swelling was also present. I saw a dermatologist 2 days later and he diagnosed Contact Dermatitis and prescribed (1) BetamethasoneDP 0.05% Ointment (2) Zyrtec and (3) Prednisone. I declined the oral steroid and applied the topical steroid for 2 days and took 2 Zyrtec pills. The itchiness was less intense and the swelling was diminishing which is why I decided to stop the pharmaceuticals and look for potential food allergy sources and supplement allergy sources via elimination and made sure that my shaving and wash soap and tooth paste were all as natural as possible.

It has been a month now and I have not been able to figure out the allergy source and the itchiness, rash are still there. I am very concerned about what to do next. I want to get back to all my supplements and the yogurt and collagen etc but am not sure if a flare -up will be triggered. So I am looking for some advice from Dr. Davis and Bob N. and the group here. Some specific questions follow.

1) Did I use the wrong clove oil product? The suggested use on the label is aromatherapy but for other uses carrier oil is recommended. Is there a chance that irreparable damage has been caused by my ingesting this 50-60 drops of this product?

2) The last time I had seen any dermatologist was 14 years ago and that was the only time. Couple of days of a corticosteroid application fixed a small rash on my face then. With the clove oil have I unleashed a demon of a dermatitis which otherwise would have stayed dormant? Will this now be front and center and cause a chronic dermatitis situation or will it become dormant again?

3) How long does clove oil remain in our system to keep triggering the histamine response? If it is gone from the body after 24 hours why do the itchiness and rashes persist?

4) Before the flare up for the past 2 or more years I have had 4-5 cloves in tea with collagen and FOS every day and never experienced any adverse reaction. How did the clove oil affect my digestive system that is causing this autoimmune reaction?

5) If I go back to the Derm (who is the same one I had seen 14 years ago) he will probably suggest that I do all the same things he had prescribed 4 weeks ago. I had not mentioned Clove Oil to him at the time because I did not make the connection then but will do if and when I see him again. He might suggest a different treatment plan perhaps. What would you all do if you were in my shoes?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.
