Macrophages promote formation of complicated and unstable plaques by maintaining a proinflammatory microenvironment. At the same time, anti-inflammatory macrophages contribute to tissue repair and plaque stabilization.

Reducing proinflammatory conditions---Astaxanthin has inhibitory effects on macrophage activation, such as scavenger receptors up-regulation, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activation, and pro-inflammatory cytokines secretion. Astaxanthin reduces MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-9, MMP-12 and MMP-14 activity and expression.

Studies have shown that 5 mg astaxanthin per day reduces oxidative stress and damaging of blood vessels by 60% in 3 weeks. It reduces inflammation, improves lipid profiles, reduces blood pressure and promotes better blood flow in capillaries.

  • AstaREAL Astaxanthin (100mg/day x 24weeks) decreased ruptured plaques in the arteries by 49% and improved plaque stability by 46% compared to control group in rabbits (Li et. al, 2004).

  • AstaREAL Astaxanthin (50mg/day and 5mg/day) intake for 2 weeks diminished incidences of stroke by 50% and 25% in hypertensive rats (Hussein et.al 2005)

Astaxanthin also binds peroxides.

Looking at AstaVistavista by AstraReal 5 MG per 2 softgels. Cannot find micro encapsulated. So many to choose from.  If you are on 325 mg aspirin is Koncentrated K or astataxanthin safe for preventing stroke?

I am giving Astaxanthin a shot based on the recommendation of a friend who is a nutritionist and has reported of several friends and herself whose osteoarthritis has decreased significantly. Can’t hurt, might help.

Bob Niland, it could also be that there is only anecdotal evidence because there is no funding/interest in research. I will be looking over the next few weeks what research I find.
