In trying to determine whether I had a parathyroid tumor, my doctor tested me for, in addition to other things, 24-hr urine calcium. The result was 307 (35-250). He recommended hydrochlorothiazide to lower the calcium. Since I already have bp in the high teens/60s AND excrete a high amount of urine per my doc (2900/24), I am having a hard time understanding how taking a diuretic that will lower my pressure more will reduce the calcium in my urine. Can anyone explain this to me, please??

I am told that, if I don’t do something to lower the calcium in my urine, I am in danger of developing kidney stones and, worst of all, osteoporosis. My last DEXA in summer 2016 showed no osteopenia or osteoporosis, but I’m concerned about what this summer’s will show.

(I’ve been on the WB program since Feb. 2017 and have lost 30+ lbs. I’m 70 (71 tomorrow), 5’4", 118 lbs.)

I share your concern.  What other tests did your doc perform and what were results?

Were you taking any supplements containing calcium, even a MVI with calcium, during the urine collection?

Boo, that study was very interesting; a lot to take in but still does demonstrate the complexity of the problem.

Thanks!

Hmmm.  Doesn’t make sense. Normal ionized calcium and high serum calcium corrected for albumin.

Pthrp?  Has this blood test been done yet?

I’m not familiar with "Pthrp", but I just looked it up. No, that has not been done, but I will request it. How do you think it relates in light of what we know now?

Thanks!
