I check my uric acid twice per day, using a $60 EasyTouch meter along with test strips that costs about 60 cents a piece. (Both available on ebay from Indonesia -- oddly no manufacturer in USA makes/sells them.) The meter seems to be very accurate as I have tested it against blood tests more than once.

I test my uric acid levels twice per day: once in the morning (along with my other fasting blood meter tests: blood glucose & ketones), and again late evening.   If the late evening number is higher than I’d like, I take some extra allopurinol based on the number.  I normally take 200mg of allopurinol per day, but depending on the evening number I might take an extra 50 or 100mg.

I find I get better sleep (on my shoulders for example) by keeping my uric acid in a more therapeutic range overnight.  I feel better when my uric acid is in the 3.1 to 4.9 range all day.  When I start getting over 5, especially over 6, it makes it hard to sleep on shoulders and I start feeling thumping in my ear drum etc.  All my joints start hurting with gouty arthritis pains when the levels stay over 6 all the time.

I can’t imagine trying to manage my hyperuricemia only testing it once per month or every 3 months, and having doctor adjust dose based on that number every few months.  Uric acid numbers are pretty dynamic throughout the day.  e.g. I woke with 3.1 one day and was near 6 later that day.

Trying to manage my uric acid numbers, by only checking my uric acid once every three months, makes about as much sense to me as trying to manage my diabetic glucose numbers with an A1C test alone -- I test my blood glucose multiple times per day to keep it under tight control.

Also having the uric acid meter and recording daily AM & PM values every day in spreadsheet, along with weight, insulin units injected (lately havent had to inject), macronutrients, # fasting hours, fitbit data (resting heart rate, calories burned, steps, sleep), fasting blood glucose, average blood glucose, glucose range, blood pressure, blood ketones, breath ketones, medications & other notes... has allowed me to troubleshoot problems, seeing how everything correlates.  e.g. I found that no matter what I ate, my uric acid levels seem to correlate to the amount of fibit calories I’ve burned.  Also I notice my uric acid levels are higher the higher my BHB blood ketones are.. as expected.

Just thought I’d share this about the meter.  Here it is in a photo of my new bag I got -- holds all three meters (glucose, ketones & uric acid).
