Hi, I’m here requesting ideas as to how to deal with osteoporosis. I have developed osteoporosis of both femur-necks over the past 2 years. My T value by DEXA-Machine was at -2.5 two years ago, and now its at -3.1, well into the osteoporosis range. My T value has been going down for at least 10 years, and I have finally achieved clear osteoporosis. I have never supplemented Calcium as that has always been said to be hazardous of promoting excessive CAC. I’ve been taking vitamin K2, both MK-4 and MK-7 for the past 2 years, but while the Japanese have had success with that, it hasn’t worked for me. I have temporarily taken bisphosphonates like actonel and boniva, and prolia injections over the past few years, but I don’t like the idea of staying on these drugs if I don’t have to because they have nasty side effects. And they work by shutting off removal of dead bone cells.

Also, my balance has gotten worse over the past 5 years, and I’ve had a serious fall every 6 months or so, so I feel pretty vulnerable to a fracture. Each fall is a separate experience. How serious each fall is depends on what you land on. So far I’ve been fortunate in that the only bones I’ve broken have been ribs, which heal up in month or two.

My PCP and his DEXA nurse are recommending that I supplement with 1200 mg of calcium /day and a Prolia shot every 6 months. How much calcium is safe to take per day without running a risk of building up coronary calcium faster? I’m currently staying under about 5% coronary calcium increase/year over the past 5 years. I do strength workouts 3 days a week, using weights. Some recent values and my comments are:

Age: 81
Weight: 165 this was my high school weight, but I could stand to lose 5 or 10 lbs.
Total LDL-P: 1741 this was around 500 as long as I was on 10 mg of Crestor, but I stopped taking it 3 years ago because it appears to increase mortality as you age. And my CAC change hasn’t worsened.
Small LDL-P: 90 this appears to be the lower limit of detect-ability for this parameter. I have been at this level since going on a low-carb diet around 10 years ago, which I consider to be a plus.
HDL-P 28
LDL-C 170 I gave up statins 3 years ago
HDL-C 78.8 my HDL-C looks a lot better than HDL-P, for some reason
Triglycerides 52
PTH parathyroid hormone 24 pg/ml ref range 12-88
Vitamin D3 78 mg/dl(7000IU/Day)
Calcium 9.8 mg/dl
Magnesium 1600 magnesium citrate
Vitamin K2 MK-4(60 mg)
Vitamin K2 MK-7(400mcg)
I also take 30mg of fiber&probiotics from the gut institute (Grace Liu)
plus homemade saurekraut & kifer

Great discussion for me as I look over results of my first ever DEXA...osteopenia at all three sites. Lumbar T-Score at -2.2, close to osteoporosis range.

One more thing to arrest and reverse! @#$^!!!

Yes, Z-score was on the full report. For L1-L4,   Z= -1.4   T= -2.2

I also picked up Pizzorno’s book - looks like a great read.

Thanks for all the help!

Pete
Why were you tested for osteoporosis in the first place? It’s somewhat unusual to test men in their 60’s w/o a risk factor. It’s always helpful to know the root cause.

Thank you all for your input on the subject of Ks.  I am more confident about what to buy and how to take it.

Hi Linda, anything you missed is in the Pizzorno book - very comprehensive.
