This paper

https://sci-hub.se/downloads/2020-08-05/4f/10.1001@jama.2020.10224.pdf#view=FitH

Concludes that it isn’t good for preventing depression.  I don’t think that is true so I dug into it - could not find the post treatment vit-D levels listed?   So I wrote the authors - it was in another paper:

https://cyber.sci-hub.se/MTAuMTA1Ni9uZWptb2ExODA5OTQ0/manson2018.pdf#view=FitH

baseline = 30.8±10.0 ng per milliliter

Treatment group at one year = 41.8 ng per milliliter

My take - the baseline was at the edge for treating rickets.. 41.8 may not be the optimal level for depression (or for improving the innate immune response.) I’ve read where native people living with out western clothing would often have levels over 100.

I don’t think we really know what level we should target.. I’ve seen some people that say over 50 - some have even recommended over 70. I’m quite confident that I don’t know.<grin>.

Careful systematic research remains to find the optimal level - could be anything between 40 - 90?

Evolution did not prepare us for life wearing clothing and living under artificial lights.

,.,.

I have a speculative theory that we are hairless apes because of vitamin-D and it might have a role in the evolutionary changes in our brain that led to much higher IQ.
